I am going to a knitting party this weekend. I have absolutely NO idea how to knit, but I am a willing student. Confession, I snagged a bag of yarn from my sister’s closet while I was home for the wedding last weekend. (Alexandra, if you’re reading this, I owe you one.) Since I have no actual knitting experience, I don’t know if I am being ambitious by wanting to knit a cowl neck warmer for my first project. The trick is finding a pattern that doesn’t make me look like I’m wearing a neck brace. Here are a few styles that I am considering:

I like the first one best! But fair warning, I learned to knit a couple years ago, and still all I can make is a dishcloth. They are nifty dishcloths though!

I love to knit! It’s not hard but it can be tricky so if you find someone at the party who is really good, i’m sure she would be willing to help you. I made a bunch of neck warmers from a pattern I got on Etsy last Christmas. They came out great! To start, you might want to just make a plain scarf to get good at simple knitting and purling. After you master those, you can start throwing in patterns and cables. Cables look impressive but they are actually quite easy. The Lion Brand Yarns website has lots of free patterns and they are rated beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, etc. Good luck!

Wow, Kate! This is awesome! I will check out those patterns you mentioned. Ok, I feel like I have more realistic expectations going into this party. I would love to see some of the things you’ve made. I will let you know how my cowl turns out!
